Homegroup which a lot of you Windows users might already be aware of allows you to share files and other devices with other Windows 7 users in a home network. And as such, if you have Windows 7 installed as the primary operating system for your computer, you can view the Homegroup icon in the Windows Explorer navigation pane.

This in turn indicates that the service is active irrespective of whether you have established a Homegroup or not. And it is actually waiting for you to add more computers and devices. Now unless the same service is disabled, your copy of Windows will automatically run it in the background using valuable system resources while doing so.

So in getting on with our article and the task at hand, if you wish to remove the same Homegroup application from your computer, do so by following a few simple steps as suggested by Microsoft with Windows 7 Support. Let us now take a look shall we?

Removing Homegroup from Windows Explorer with Windows 7 Support

To begin with the Windows 7 Support steps to remove the Homegroup application from your Windows 7 Explorer feature, you will first need to head for the Windows “Start” menu and click on the “Computer” option to open the same Windows Explorer.

After which, locate the “Homegroup” icon from the left hand corner of the navigation pane. Right click on it and select the “Change Homegroup Settings” option from the resulting menu.

Now if you have already setup a Homegroup on your network, you will be able to see a link titled as “Leave the Homegroup”. Microsoft suggests you click

However, if your computer is not yet part of a Homegroup, you will first need to create one before you proceed with disabling the service. So select “Create a Homegroup” and follow the resulting on-screen prompts and complete it. You can then get back to your Windows Explorer and leave the Homegroup.

Close Windows Explorer and open the “Start” menu again. And in the “Search” field, type in “services.msc” followed by “Enter”. This will open the “Services” window.

Locate the Homegroup Listener and Homegroup Provider services in the same list. Double click on each one so as to open their individual “Properties” windows.

Next up, change the “Startup Type” from “Manual” to “Disabled” on the same “Properties” window. Then continue with the “Stop” button in the “Service Status” section. Click “Apply” then “Ok”. These actions will automatically stop Windows 7 from running the service on your system.

Finally, hit on the “Services” window and re-open Windows Explorer. And this time, the Homegroup icon will be missing from the navigation pane.
