It is estimated that Bit Torrent has more users than Hulu and Netflix combined. So if you’re looking for a way to get TV programming, you might actually want to watch and save some bucks by firing the cable company; Bit Torrent could be the answer.

No, Bit Torrent hasn’t teamed up with Chrysler to put a new kind of music player in Dodge Rams; instead, they’re creating a new and improved downloading software. They call it Project Chrysalis. It provides some neat new features in Bit Torrent including personal channels.

That means you can send your home movies to all of your Facebook friends and get de-friended. It is supposed to let you create a social network of people with common interests. There is also artist endorsed content, which sounds like another way for overpaid celebrities to make a few more bucks out of us.

The interesting thing will be if Bit Torrent can survive in today’s world. Everybody, including Google, Microsoft and Facebook, is developing distribution networks. Open face efforts like Bit Torrent and Ubuntu may have been too successful for their own good. Their applications were so popular and successful that everybody is copying them.
After all, what is Google Chrome OS but Ubuntu in another guise? For that matter, what is Hulu but Napster redesigned for the masses? Microsoft seems to be developing its own Bit Torrent to distribute Windows 8 and other programs. Even Facebook is trying to get into the distribution business.
This means that Bit Torrent will have its work cut out for it if it wants to survive, especially with free Netflix now installed in every Windows home edition. Downloading of streaming video has gone mainstream. Actually, it’s the future of entertainment, given the high price of cable and satellite TV and the fact that there is nothing to watch on broadcast TV anymore. (Is there an actual human being in theUSwho watches CBS or NBC primetime these days?)

Bit Torrent has created a revolution that will change the entertainment industry beyond recognition. Producers are already making shows for Netflix and Hulu. My guess is that movie and TV production will become more like publishing with producers creating genre fair aimed at particular audiences.
